Transformation

We've started a new tab on the blog: Transformation. I hope you'll check it out. We are going to follow the progress of Cathy & Carlos Loyola as they transform the yard of their new home into a haven for birds & butterflies (and themselves) using Florida native plants, mulch and NO pesticides, fertilizer or extra water! Yes, it CAN be done!

Take a look at the soil. It's very sandy and well drained with very little organic matter.  The key is to use plants that grow naturally under these conditions, and add 3-4 inches of organic mulch to moderate temperatures in the soil, and break down slowly to give the plants what they need for survival.

By NOT fertilizing or over-watering, the plants will grow at a normal rate, be able to fend off pests on their own, and won't need pesticides.  Be sure to check up on their progress as Cathy & Carlos create a beautiful landscape that looks like the Real Florida!
