Next Steps: Finalizing the Punta Gorda Fertilizer Ordinance!
The fact that the council voted to MOVE FORWARD does NOT mean they will automatically vote FOR the ordinance! Believe me, I worked for a city government, and nothing can be taken for granted. They may in fact, be hoping that everyone assumes that voting to move forward is a vote for the ordinance, and be hopeful no one will show up at the actual vote. PLEASE do not take anything for granted. The fertilizer industry has paid lobbyists who try to stop ordinances like this one for their own monetary gain. Here is an email from Katie Parrish asking for help:
From: Katie Parrish
Friends:
I wanted to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who attended Punta Gorda’s City Council Meeting last Wednesday to show their support for a strong fertilizer ordinance which reduces the runoff that is fueling harmful algae blooms like Red Tide and help improve our water quality. We definitely made an impact!
Not only was the story on the front page of the Charlotte Sun, but the City Council voted unanimously to move forward on passing a fertilizer ordinance!
On Wednesday, June 6th the Punta Gorda City Council will have its second reading of their fertilizer ordinance and hold their final vote! It’s important we fill the chamber one last time and show our support and get the votes we need to win!
I hope you can join us one more time wearing our famous neon-stickers and send a clear message the council that water quality is important to Punta Gorda!
When: Wednesday, June 6th
Time: Council meeting starts at 9 a.m.
Where: Punta Gorda City Hall, 326 Marion Ave in Downtown PuntaGorda
Details: There will not be a public comment period so you simply just need to show up, wear one of our neon stickers and show your support!
Thank you for your continued support!
