Why We Do What We Do...

Just received an email from a friend in nature, and she agreed to let me share with all of you. Just goes to show we can all make positive changes, we all have the potential to inspire others, and they in turn can inspire us.

Hi Sue ,
I just want to say thank you for your inspiring website and you tube videos. I first got inspired with natives when I attended a natures scape type event at MacArthur Beach State Park in Palm Beach County ( where I live). I couldn't believe how much I didn't know. I found your website through one of the magazines. I think it was called "Plant Real Florida." Since then I have become hooked. I live in a townhouse and it is somewhat limited in planting space as opposed to a single family home. The perimeter of the fence had scheflerra (sp?). I never liked them and I ripped them out and replaced them with natives. Then like an addiction I couldn't stop (lol). I have 2 small children and they have done the whole project with me. My 8 yr old can read so he cross-references the botanical names and can name so many plants. People at the nurseries look at him in amazement when he talks about plants. My 4 yr old is quite knowledgeable too. It's funny how kids really listen. So its family time, hands on science lesson, exercise, conservation, and beautification wrapped in one:). I'm on the landscape committee for my HOA and they are open to adding more natives(we have lots of turf grass) but its the whole "we have no money" story. If you know of any grants or programs please let me know. I have attached pictures of my landscape. The front entrance has 2 hibiscus that were there when I bought it. 1 ripped out during our storm last week. I'd like to replace them. If you have any suggestion please share. Any suggestions on any of it please share. You have permission to use any photos if you desire just please do not use the one with my house number. Again thank you for your tutorials and please keep them coming.

I've suggested to Laurel to increase the width of the plant beds if possible and to add enough mulch for it to be three inches in depth.
